Plush Petals Blanket Hong Kong as CJ Hendry Debuts Immersive Exhibition

HONG KONG — The intersection of botanical beauty and contemporary art has found a new home on the Central Harbourfront this month. From March 19 to 22, 2026, acclaimed artist CJ Hendry is presenting “Flower Market,” a massive, site-specific installation that marks her first major exhibition in Asia. Featuring more than 150,000 hand-crafted plush flora, the four-day event transforms a glasshouse pavilion at AIA Vitality Park into a surreal sanctuary where the “blooms” require neither water nor sunlight.

From Social Media to High-Scale Installations

Based in New York and originally from Brisbane, CJ Hendry rose to international prominence through her hyperrealistic ballpoint pen drawings. However, she has increasingly moved into the realm of large-scale experiential art. Following successful iterations in Brooklyn and a desert exhibition in the Mojave, Hendry’s “Flower Market” arrives in Hong Kong during the city’s prestigious Art Month, a period when the global art community descends upon the harbour.

The exhibition’s popularity was immediate; registration slots for the free event reached capacity within 24 hours of opening, highlighting a significant public appetite for accessible, tactile art in a high-tech city.

A Sensory Journey Through Fabric and Form

Visitors enter the installation via a sprawling hedge maze, leading into a greenhouse filled with 26 different floral designs. While species like sunflowers, violets, and thistles are instantly recognizable, their scale and texture—rendered entirely in soft, plush fabric—challenge conventional perceptions of nature.

Hendry describes the project as a “playful, childlike adventure,” designed to provide a moment of pure aesthetic joy before visitors return to the frantic pace of Hong Kong life. The juxtaposition is sharp: just miles away from the iconic, bustling cut-flower stalls of Prince Edward, this market offers a static, silent version of nature that explores themes of domesticity and abundance.

Local Homage: The Henderson and the Bauhinia

To root the exhibition in its local context, Hendry has unveiled two exclusive commissions:

  • The Henderson Flower: An oversized Allium symbolizing resilience and unity, commissioned to honor the 50th anniversary of Henderson Land.
  • The Bauhinia: A soft-sculpture interpretation of Hong Kong’s official floral emblem, reimagining a potent political and cultural symbol through a lens of comfort and intimacy.

Visiting the Market

Located at AIA Vitality Park, the installation is a centerpiece of the waterfront’s Art Month activities. While admission is free, it requires a pre-booked e-ticket. In a move that emphasizes the “democratic” nature of the art, every guest is invited to take home one plush stem for free, with additional flowers available for purchase at HK$38.

For those lucky enough to have secured a ticket, organizers recommend a weekday visit to avoid peak crowds. The exhibition stands as a testament to the power of public art, proving that even in a city dominated by digital finance and skyscrapers, there is a profound longing for the whimsical—and the everlasting.
